The 411 on Hail

Hail is formed when very strong thunderstorm updrafts meet super-cooled water droplets. Super-cooled water droplets are liquid water drops that are surrounded by air that is below freezing, and they're a common occurrence in thunderstorms. There are two methods of hail stone formation and growth that give hail stones their "layered" look.

Wet Growth

A tiny ice crystal will be the nucleus of the hailstone. In wet growth, supercooled water droplets collide with and spread across the ice nucleus. Since this process is relatively slow (slower than the dry growth process) it results in a layer of clear ice.

Dry Growth

Unlike wet growth, the supercooled water meets the ice nucleus and immediately freezes. Because this process is so fast, everything within the supercooled droplet, including small air bubbles, freezes into the layer, which gives it a cloudy look.

Rain and hail are what creates the "bounded" portion of the bounded weak echo region (BWER) on the radar. The weak echo region is created by a strong updraft, which also helps the hail to grow.


Hail forms and is carried upward through the storm by the updraft and held above the freezing line.


The hailstone collides with supercooled droplets and grows in size.


When the hail becomes too large and heavy to be supported by the updraft, it falls to the ground.

Some Tips & Tricks to Avoid Hail Damage


Covered parking is the best way to protect your vehicle from an unexpected hail storm. If you live in a state frequented by hail storms, be sure to be scope out those covered spots during hail storm season. It could save you the time and money spent on hail repair!


If you are caught in a hail storm while driving around town, don’t try to make it home. Instead, seek temporary shelter for you and your vehicle. Oftentimes, local malls and other retail locations have parking garages where you can easily park if you see a storm brewing.


If you don’t have access to covered parking or temporary shelter, try your best to cover your car. While some companies sell car covers specifically for hail protection, your own blankets can work just as effectively! Be sure you duct tape your blankets down because high winds could carry them away. The tape could leave your car a bit sticky, but will most likely reduce the damage sustained.
